What is Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance?

Mexico tourist auto insurance provides vehicle insurance for tourists driving in Mexico using their U.S. or Canadian-registered vehicles. This type of insurance is necessary because Canadian and U.S. insurance policies are not recognized by authorities in Mexico as legal proof of liability insurance.

What does Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance cover?**

Mexico tourist auto insurance is specialized auto insurance for vehicles that are otherwise not registered for use in Mexico but have registration in the US, Canada, or another foreign country. It’s for property damage or injuries you cause to other people when you are at fault when you hit them while driving in Mexico.

It can also provide coverage for damage to your car as well. The amount of coverage you receive depends on how much limit you purchase or which coverages you add to your policy, the value of your vehicle, or if your behavior or risk is subject to any policy exclusions. Check out the different types of coverage offered by the typical Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance policy, and get a custom Mexico auto insurance quote.

Civil Liability: Coverage for damage to others

  • Civil liability
Coverage for property damage or injuries to others

The foundation of your Mexico auto insurance coverage is liability protection. Civil liability insurance is a necessary coverage and mandatory coverage when driving in Mexico. The purpose of liability insurance is to protect you when you’re liable for the result of a car accident:

Bodily injury liability: This portion of civil liability coverage pays for covered injury expenses caused if you hit someone and they’re injured. This coverage will provide protection for all people you harm in an accident, as well as legal fees if you have to go to court due to the incident.

Property damage liability: Property damage coverage can pay damages to another person’s vehicle or other property.

Example*: You run a stop sign and hit a vehicle in the intersection. You damage the other party’s car during the accident and injure the driver. Civil liability coverage can both cover the driver’s injuries and the cost to repair or replace the other party’s car.

  • Legal & Bail Bonds
    Typically included with civil liability

When you have an accident in Mexico, and you cause injury or property damage, you may have to appear before a judge to adjudicate liability. Typically, included in your civil liability will be legal assistance and bail bonds. This coverage will provide you access to a network of attorneys and the appropriate bail bond required while the court is adjudicating the incident.

Coverage for you, your passengers, and your vehicle

  • Property Damage
This is similar to Collision in your US policy.

If your car is damaged during an accident with another vehicle or object, your Property damage coverage will act like your collision coverage. It can pay to repair or replace your vehicle.  Property damage covers you regardless of fault. This coverage will likely include a deductible that you select and is applied toward the cost of repairs. However, unlike your US policy, this coverage will repair some things like animal strikes and natural occurrences (eg. hail)

Example: You underestimate a turn and you veer off the road into a tree. The incident causes $5,000 in damage to your vehicle. Your deductible is $500, so you would pay the first $500 and your insurance company would pay $4,500.

  • Total Theft
In the US policy, this would be considered part of Comprehensive coverage

Total theft is similar to your comprehensive coverage on your US policy. However, it only provides for the peril of Total Theft. Things like vandalism and natural events may be covered under property damage coverage.  This coverage normally has a deductible. Your deductible is selected by you when you buy your policy and usually applies before or simultaneously to claims payments made by the insurance carrier. Some carriers will provide additional coverage for a “Partial Theft.”

Example: Your car is parked outside a restaurant and when you return to drive back to your hotel, the vehicle is missing. You report the theft to the Mexican police. The theft may be covered less your deductible after all the conditions and time have elapsed.

  • Medical Expense
This is a form of Medical Payments in your US auto policy

Medical expenses coverage is for occupants of the insured car while in Mexican territory, for injuries they suffer while in a covered car accident. The expenses may be hospitalization, medical services, ambulance, and funeral expense.

Example*: While driving in Mexico you have an accident while going to the store with a friend. You are hit by another driver and your friend is injured while in the passenger seat of your insured car. Your passenger suffers a minor injury. Medical expense coverage may cover your doctor’s visit to treat the injury.

  • Towing & Labor
For moving and labor expenses when the vehicle is inoperable after a covered an accident

If your car is inoperable after a covered accident. The towing and labor coverage can provide a tow to a local repair shop. Each insurance company sets its rules, the miles you can be towed, and when this coverage applies.

Example*: During a road trip with the family, you experience a minor accident that damages your wheel and tire. Towing and labor coverage can tow your vehicle to the nearest repair shop.
