Owning a boat opens the door to unforgettable experiences on Mexico’s waters, but before setting sail, it’s important to ensure you have the right insurance coverage. Mexico requires boats operating in its waters to carry liability insurance, which protects you from financial responsibility in case your vessel causes damage or injury to others.

Below, we answer the most common questions about Mexico boat insurance to help you understand your coverage options before purchasing a policy.

Most Common Mexico Boat Insurance FAQs

Do I need insurance for my boat in Mexico?

Yes. Mexico law requires all boats and watercraft operating in its waters to carry third-party liability insurance issued by a Mexican insurance company. This coverage is essential for docking at marinas, navigating Mexican waters, and protecting yourself in case of accidents involving other boats, docks, marinas, or third parties.

What types of boats and personal watercraft can be insured?

We offer coverage for a variety of recreational boats, including:

Personal watercraft (jet skis, wave runners, etc.)
Powerboats and sailboats
Yachts up to 133 feet in length

🚫 Commercial boats, charter boats, and vessels used for business purposes are not eligible for coverage.

Can I get insurance for a commercial boat?

No. Our policies strictly cover recreational vessels. If your boat is used for commercial activities, including chartering, fishing tours, or transportation, it will not be eligible for coverage under this program.

Can I purchase short-term boat insurance?

Yes. We offer daily, 6-month, and annual policies, all of which are available when you obtain a quote.

💡 Important note: If the daily option is marked with an “X” instead of a price, that means a 6-month or annual policy is more cost-effective.

🚤 If you cancel your policy early, refunds are prorated based on a fixed scale. For example, after 6 months, only 30% of the premium is refundable.

What liability limits are available?

Our policies provide Combined Single Limit (CSL) liability coverage, which means a single coverage amount applies to both bodily injury and property damage. The available limits are:

  • $100,000 CSL
  • $300,000 CSL
  • $500,000 CSL

📌 This coverage applies to third-party damages only and does NOT cover:

  • Damage to your own boat
  • Injuries to you or your passengers
  • Medical expenses for the insured or their crew
Do you offer yacht insurance?

Yes, we have a specialized yacht insurance program. For details, call our team at (877) 334-7646.

What happens if I get into an accident?

If an accident occurs:

1️⃣ Immediately notify local authorities
2️⃣ Call the emergency claim numbers listed on your policy
3️⃣ Take photos and document details
4️⃣ Do not alter the scene unless necessary for safety
5️⃣ Submit a written report within 5 days

🚨 Failure to report the accident promptly could result in claim denial.

Does the policy include legal assistance?

Yes, if you purchase the Legal Assistance coverage, it provides:

  • Professional legal representation in Mexico
  • Bail bond services if required
  • Defense in liability lawsuits

📌 Legal services must be provided by the insurance company’s attorneys. If you hire your own lawyer, only a portion of the fees will be reimbursed.
